"Come Fly with Me" Monarch Docent Internships

Docent Interns accepted into this program will:
  • Reflect our mission of "Connect to the Earth and be Healed"
  • Gain hands-on Monarch experience under the guidance of Linda Yraceburu
  • Learn about Monarch cycles, migration, conservation and preservation
  • Receive feedback from from the shimas and work on programs to enhance their knowledge and fulfill outreach possibilities
The typical intern is expected to:
  • Assist in maintenance, including mulching and weeding the Butterfly Garden
  • Assist the shimas with care of migrating butterflies including proper chrysalis support, working with black death parasite, helping with routine count and record keeping, and other activities.
  • Assist with seasonal seeding, sprouting and transplant of pollenators
  • Learn seasonal requirements of the Butterfly Garden
  • Give educational tours and help with educational outreach programs
  • Develop working knowledge of other butterfly species on at the ranch
Availability: Class is free, with an hour of work service each class + 3 hours once a month, upon another day of your choosing, to working the garden as part of our maintenance and documentation team.
 
To complete the course, interns will attend all of the classes - making special make up arrangements if one is missed - and study materials, preparing for public tours, preparing two five minute talks and one ten minute final presentation.  All interns must be preregistered.

Dates: 1. June 4: REARING MONARCHS (Class 1)
2. July 2: MONARCH LIFE CYCLE (Class 2)
3. August 6: BE A BUTTERFLY (Class 3)
4. September 3: WORKING WITH KIDS (Class 4)
5. October 1: CLASS FINALS
