Sharing My Shima
Mellissa Seaman
Today I’m sharing my Shima (my adopted momma/auntie) with you. Maria Yraceburu has been teaching and sharing the indigenous ways she grew up in, the ways her grandfather taught her, for over 30 years. She was raised on the land, on a reservation, in close touch with nature and also with the old teachings that her grandfather passed down to her. And then she entered the modern world, and experienced many adventures and heart-breaks. Now, she is a teacher and guide for many who feel their hearts stirring for a more earth-centered spirituality and self-care practice.
I have witnessed Maria and her partner Lynda Yraceburu utilize ceremony, prayer, and herbal wisdom to heal so many over the last 18 years of knowing them. Young people, mostly who were diagnosed with various mental and physical things that no one knew what to do with. And with prayer, song, herb and ceremony, they were not only healed from those things, but uplifted into being family - connected, a part of something bigger, which Maria calls the Great Coming Together.
I am one of those young’uns. I was broken open when I met Maria, having only JUST gone from being a lawyer to suddenly being “psychic.” She was the one who showed up and taught me that it’s natural to See the Unseen, to Collaborate with Spirit and Earth, and to Channel my genius in my own unique way.

There’s so much I can say about my shima. About my gratitude to be in learning with her. About my deep honor that she trusts me to source and evolve and carry what I’ve learned forward. About my deep weeping love for this hilarious potent kooky and kind ceremonialist, storyteller, and guide.
You are super lucky. Because today you get to meet her, hear her stories of her own life, some that she’s never shared before, and feel the transmission of my teacher and shima and friend.

sThis is a potent interview with one of my favorite people on the planet.
